Membertou to Host National Aboriginal Hockey Championships in May 2027

Membertou, NS - The Aboriginal Sport Circle (ASC) has announced that Membertou First Nation in Nova Scotia will host the 24th National Aboriginal Hockey Championships (NAHC) from May 3 to 8, 2027 at the Membertou Sport & Wellness Centre.

Bringing together elite U18 Indigenous hockey players from First Nation, Inuit, and Métis communities across Canada, the six-day tournament is a national showcase of high-performance sport and cultural pride.

"The National Aboriginal Hockey Championships are more than a tournament - they're a celebration of community, culture, and youth excellence," said Rob Newman, President of the Aboriginal Sport Circle. "Membertou is a proven host, and we're excited to see the Championships continue to bring people together and showcase the strength of Indigenous youth across the country."

Membertou First Nation will serve as the Indigenous host, working in partnership with the Mi'kmaw Sports Council. The event is expected to draw athletes, families, and supporters from coast to coast to coast.

"Membertou is thrilled to welcome the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships back to our community for the third time since 2018," said Terry Paul, Chief of Membertou. "Our Mi'kmaw nation plays a significant role in the origins of hockey, and we take great pride in welcoming Indigenous athletes and their families from across Canada to experience our rich history and culture."

Chief Paul noted that upgrades to the Membertou Sport & Wellness Centre since the community last hosted in 2022 will help deliver an enhanced experience for participants and spectators.

Established in 2002, the NAHC continues to rotate host communities each year, creating opportunities to celebrate Indigenous culture, strengthen connections, and promote pride and unity through sport.

Additional event details will be released in the coming months.
