WITH COVID-19, INDIGENOUS CULTURAL AWARENESS TRAINING COURSE OPENS DIGITAL CLASSROOM

The Aboriginal Sport Circle (ASC) is proud to announce an exciting new partnership that offers virtual Indigenous cultural awareness training to sports organizations across Canada.

Current COVID-19-related restrictions means that offering in-person workshops and courses is impossible. This is why ASC, at the request of several national sports organizations (NSO) and multi-sport organizations (MSO), has partnered with NVision Insight Group to provide The Path: Your Journey through Indigenous Canada, a virtual classroom course in Indigenous cultural awareness. After hosting this course for 19 participants from 13 NSOs and MSOs earlier in March at the House of Sport in Ottawa, ON, this Cultural Awareness training has been made available in a virtual classroom environment for all representatives of NSOs and MSOs who would like to participate.

Offering Indigenous Cultural Awareness learning opportunities to Canadians is a crucial component of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Report and the Calls to Action. This course partially meets the TRC Calls to Action for Canadians to receive "cultural competency training" by teaching about "the history and legacy of residential schools, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Treaties and Aboriginal rights, Indigenous law, and Aboriginal-Crown relations."

"This is a step in the right direction for Canadians to learn more about their role in supporting and implementing the TRC Calls to Action and, ultimately, reconciliation in our country," said ASC CEO, Carey Calder. "We are happy to see our partners at the Coaching Association of Canada step up immediately and take this course. They are demonstrating real leadership in reconciliation."

This summer, the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) partnered with ASC to provide the virtual classroom version of The Path to all of staff as part of professional development. Twenty-seven staff members have already participated and another 30 are signed up for courses this fall.

"Building a shared body of cultural knowledge and awareness is an important step in our ongoing reconciliation with Indigenous peoples in Canada.
