The ASC Welcomes the 20th National Aboriginal Hockey Championships

Ottawa, ON - The Aboriginal Sport Circle (ASC) is pleased to sponsor the 2023 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships (NAHC) hosted in Winnipeg, Manitoba from May 7 to 13. A collective of Provincial/Territorial Aboriginal Sports bodies, the ASC is Canada's national voice for sport, physical activity, and recreation for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people.

This is the twentieth NAHC event, which the ASC founded in 2002 to provide an annual forum for elite Indigenous hockey players across Canada. "Players, coaches, and those supporting them all contribute to the excellence of these athletes," says Matt Tapper, CEO of the ASC. A focal point of grassroots and regional Indigenous hockey development, the NAHC features both girls' and boys' teams.

Tapper himself has served on the coaching staff for the female Team Atlantic. He emphasizes the potential of hockey - and sports in general - to promote a healthy, active lifestyle, as well as teamwork and leadership for Indigenous youth. The NAHC also helps foster cultural unity and pride, celebrating the abilities of Indigenous athletes from across Canada.

The National Aboriginal Hockey Championships will convene at the Seven Oaks Sportsplex on May 7, 2023. It will continue every day until both male and female champions are awarded on May 13.
