Ross Powless inducted into Canada’s Sport Hall of Fame

Canada's Sport Hall of Fame announced the Class of 2020/21 inductees on May 27, 2020. Inductees will receive the Order of Sport award, Canada's highest sporting honour.

Six athletes and five builders were selected this year to signify and celebrate Canada Sport Hall of Fame's 65th anniversary year. The Aboriginal Sport Circle (ASC) was incredibly proud to see the late Ross Powless inducted in the builder category for the sport of lacrosse.

Belonging to the Turtle clan, Mohawk Nation of the Haudenosaunee, Ross Powless was born in Ohsweken, Ontario, on the Six Nations of the Grand River in 1926. He is considered one of the fathers of modern lacrosse in Canada. In 1951 and 1952, he received the Ontario Regional Tom Longboat Award as the most outstanding First Nations athlete. Ross joins his son, Gaylord Powless, who was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 2017.
